History
Strata Trust is the rebranded name of Self Directed IRA Services Inc. Self Directed IRA Services was originally founded in 2008 as a subsidiary of Horizon Bank, SSB. It functioned primarily as a trust company for individual investors who wanted to open a Self Directed IRA. Then, in 2010 it launched institutional services which were aimed at financial professionals whose client base could utilize a self directed platform. In 2017 the company rebranded as Strata Trust.
Services
Strata Trust offers all of the standard Self Directed IRA services. These include:
- Offering the standard self directed retirement plans: Traditional IRA, Roth IRA, Beneficiary IRA, SEP IRA, Simple IRA
- Processing documentation for contributions, transfers, and rollovers
- Executing investments
- Ensuring that assets are properly registered
- Performing relevant tax reporting

Unique Services
Strata Trust offers a number of services or features that are not always found by other Custodians.
Investment of unused client funds – If a client has funds in their account that are not currently being invested, Strata will deposit those funds into an interest-bearing account. This Custodial NOW account is held by Strata’s parent company, Horizon Bank, and/or by other specially selected financial institutions. While the funds are in that account, they enjoy FDIC coverage up to $250,000.

Process and Timeframe
Strata Trust utilizes a standard process for the Self Directed IRA account setup. This includes establishing the account and funding it either via rollover, direct transfer, or an initial cash contribution. Some of the time frames mentioned on the Strata website include:
- Direct Transfer: 10-14 days
- Direct Rollover: 2-6 weeks
- Open a Self Directed account: As little as 1-2 days
- Cash-only Transfer: 3-5 business days
- Receive In-Kind distribution: 3-10 business days
